Bragging Right: Speaking Well

Bragging RightBragging Right.  This time of year, there is a pretty fair amount of bragging going around. The Super Bowl, the Celtics and the Bruins are in full swing.  The Red Sox Spring Training is gearing up soon. March Madness approaches like a whirlwind, stats of everyone’s favorite team flying everywhere.   Trash talk abounds.
Being a Boston Irishman with Saint Patty’s Day around the corner, history has proven that potential blizzards of the blarney are most probably in the forecast.

Let’s Get To It!

First, let me state the obvious:  you can get into a lot of trouble bragging the wrong way, to the wrong crowd these days!  What is the wrong way? Let’s bring some truth into the conversation.  The Book of Wisdom, Proverbs, tells us that:

If you have been foolish in exalting yourself,
Or if you have devised evil, put your hand on your mouth.
Don’t be surprised if someone bloodies your nose.
Churned milk turns into butter;
riled emotions turn into fist fights.
Proverbs 31:32-33 nkjv/msg

Bragging Right Versus Bragging Wrong

Watch what you say!  Bragging the wrong way, to the wrong crew, can get you into a lot of trouble.
How does God look at bragging the wrong way?

“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5 niv

Wow!  So talking trash can not only get you in trouble with other men, (aka fistfights) but also with Almighty God!  I’ve learned to pick my fights, He’s too big to mess with.  So what if I’ve really accomplished something that I’m proud of, something that makes me feel good about myself?  Wisdom speaks again:

“Let someone else praise you, not your own mouth—a stranger, not your own lips.” Proverbs 27:2 nlt

So, we have seen how to brag wrong.  We figured out how to get ourselves in big trouble.  How do I use my mouth to stay out of trouble.  How do I use bragging right?

Bragging Right

The Wise must not Brag about their Wisdom.
The Strong must not Brag about their Strength,
Or the Powerful Boast in their Power,

Don’t let Heroes Brag of their Exploits.
The Rich must not Brag about their Money,
But if People Want to Brag Let Them Brag that
They Understand and Know Me.
Let Them Brag that I am the LORD,
and that I Am Kind and Fair, I Do What’s Right
and Set Things Right and Fair and Delight in Those
Who Do the Same Things.

This Kind of Bragging Pleases Me,
These Are My Trademarks, says the Lord
Jeremiah 9:23-24 ncv/nlt/msg

Well, I hope you make it through the season, through the storms, through the smack talk, through the bragging and through all the madness.  And Happy St Patrick’s Day to you!
